❓FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
Can an HSS drill bit be resharpened?
Yes, HSS drill bits (High Speed Steel) can be resharpened very well. With the right technique or a sharpening guide, the original cutting geometry can be restored. This extends the tool’s lifespan and saves costs.
Can tapping (thread-cutting) tools be resharpened?
In principle, yes, but it is significantly more difficult. Taps have a complex geometry, so resharpening is usually only practical with special machines or by professional workshops.
Can solid carbide (VHM) drill bits be resharpened?
Yes, solid carbide drill bits can be resharpened, but only with suitable diamond grinding wheels and the necessary expertise. Due to the material’s high hardness, resharpening is complex and is typically done by professionals.
Can drill bits generally be resharpened?
Many drill bits can be resharpened, especially standard twist drill bits. It is important to maintain the correct tip geometry. With some practice or suitable sharpening equipment, dull drill bits can be made sharp again and reused.
